The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nostoc is Nostoc commune Vaucher ex Bornet & Flahault.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Desmonostoc muscorum (Bornet & Flahault) Hrouzek & S.Ventura.
